Romanian Pipeline Hit by Attack; Ransomware Targeting Critical Infrastructure Soars

On 9 February, Check Point’s Threat Intelligence Report documented a successful intrusion against Conpet, Romania’s main pipeline operator. The attackers disrupted fuel flow and took the company’s public website offline, demonstrating that even well‑protected energy assets can be crippled with relatively low‑profile tactics. The outage forced temporary rerouting of supplies and highlighted gaps in network segmentation and incident response readiness.

The same report flagged a sharp increase in ransomware campaigns aimed at critical infrastructure worldwide. Threat actors are leveraging automated credential‑stuffing at scale and augmenting phishing lures with AI‑generated content to bypass user awareness controls. Defenders must prioritize strong authentication, continuous monitoring for anomalous credential use, and AI‑driven detection to spot sophisticated phishing attempts before they can encrypt essential services.
