Romanian Oil Pipeline Operator Conpet Disrupted by Cyber Intrusion
On 9 February, Check Point’s Threat Intelligence Report documented a successful cyber intrusion against Conpet, Romania’s national oil pipeline operator. Attackers gained access to the company’s IT environment, forcing critical services offline and severing communication channels with partners, regulators, and customers. The breach left Conpet unable to provide timely operational updates, eroding trust with key stakeholders.
The outage highlighted the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure to targeted attacks, underscoring the need for robust network segmentation, continuous monitoring, and incident‑response readiness. Defenders should note that attackers can cripple not only production systems but also the ancillary IT functions that support visibility and coordination, amplifying the overall impact on national energy security. Implementing zero‑trust principles and regularly testing supply‑chain resilience are essential steps to mitigate similar threats.
