OWASP Sunset's Meetup Platform, Shifts Event Coordination to Secure Alternatives

The OWASP Foundation announced that its long‑used Meetup.com group will be decommissioned by the end of Q2 2024. All official OWASP chapters, project teams, and community members are being asked to migrate upcoming events, mailing lists, and member data to newer collaboration tools such as Discord, Slack, or dedicated OWASP event portals. The move is framed as a step toward modernizing community engagement while preserving the open‑source ethos that underpins the organization.

For defenders, the retirement presents both a risk and an opportunity. Migrating large member rosters can expose personal data to phishing or credential‑stuffing attacks if not handled with proper encryption and verification processes. At the same time, the shift to platforms that offer granular access controls, audit logs, and integration with security information and event management (SIEM) systems gives security teams stronger visibility and the ability to enforce least‑privilege policies. Organizations should update their threat models, monitor the new channels for spoofed OWASP communications, and leverage the transition to reinforce secure collaboration practices across their own security communities.
